Deaf Hill Miners Banner Group - We're back!!! After weeks of phone calls and a sore internet finger trying to organise a band,(thanks go to Jim Robinson!) Deaf Hill Miners Banner Group has secured the services of Dearham Band from near Maryport in Cumbria. Dearham Band is a first section band who recently performed in the Saddleworth Wakes contest (of Brassed Off fame) and has competed in the US Open. SO COME AND SEE THE BANNER MARCH ON BIG MEETING DAY. DETAILS OF THE FREE BUS COMING SOON! Anybody who would like to help carry the banner or help in any way please come to our meeting at 6.30pm on Thursday 17 June 2010 at the Welfare. ALL WELCOME!
The Replica Banner was delivered on Friday 15 June 2007 and is even better than we expected!
It was paraded round the village on Wednesday 11th July, starting at 6.45pm at the Crescent at Deaf Hill, going past the pit and up to the Aged Miners Homes at Tobin Street, then down Station Road, up past Harper’s corner, round Laurel Crescent, back up Rodwell Street and back to St Paul’s church where the Rev Michael Gobbett blessed the banner.
Then it was back to the Community Centre where the bar was open!
On Big Meeting Day, 14 July 2007 we left by coach from the Community Centre at 7.30am. Then Deaf Hill Lodge Banner marched again behind Trimdon Concert Brass! Deaf Hill also had the great honour of having the Banner blessed in Durham Cathedral. Then we wove our weary way back to the bus, leaving at approx. 4.30pm back to to the Community Centre where we celebrated the day in the bar.
The previous Deaf Hill banner was turned around with the help of Sean Wainwright, Robert Iddon, Sharon Young and Neil Young. It now shows Deaf Hill lodge and is on show in the ball room. No1 & 2 shafts were sunk in 1877 but later laid in. Re-opened in 1885, No.3 shaft sunk in 1891. The workings flooded in 1919. Surface operations combined with Wingate by a rail link in 1955. Exhaustion of economic reserves led to closure on 24th February 1967. This DMA banner dates from the 1930s and is kept at the Deaf Hill Welfare Hall.
The meetings are held each month at Trimdon Station Community Centre (welfare hall) please come along and give your support for the banner and all future events.
Banner March Wednesday 9th July 2008 Despite atrocious weather, Deaf Hill Banner Group paraded the new Lodge Banner and Community Banner round the the streets of Deaf Hill, Trimdon Station and Trimdon Colliery on Wednesday 9 July. £225 was collected towards funds to enable the banner to march in Durham. The Group would like to thank Trimdon Concert Brass, all who helped on the night and especially the people of Deaf Hill and Trimdon Station for their continuing support.
