It was a special day for users of the Trimdon Station Community Centre on Tuesday 21st June, when their new computer suite was officially unveiled by Councillor Maurice Nicholls.

The Centre has received sponsorship from Councillor Nichols, Councillor Wilson and The Deaf Hill Regeneration Partnership to purchase the much needed10 new computers, all with the latest Windows 7 Operating Systems and Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Software.  This together with the large wide-screen monitors, offer an excellent computing experience for both beginners and experienced operators.

Members of the Computer Club were given a special invitation to attend the ceremony and take part in the celebratory refreshments afterwards.  Members work on various projects, some starting out using word processing, learning how to use the internet, digital imaging, producing photographic albums, birthday or memory books, reading books, cards and personal calendars, even writing their own life stories.  Help is also available for writing letters and CV’s as well as learning keyboard skills.  Calendars are produced every year for sale to bring in funds for the Centre as well as personalised letters from Santa Claus, addressed and posted directly to the child concerned. Consequently there is a wide spectrum of activities surrounding the use of the computer suite.

The Computer Club is open for anyone to attend on Wednesdays between 9am and 4pm and also a Thursday evening from 6pm to 9pm., when a voluntary tutor is on hand to support anyone who wants to learn how to use a computer and well as digital imaging.  There is no pressure to learn and learners are able to relax and learn at their own pace and better still no final exams to pass! The minimal charge of £2.00 per session goes towards the upkeep of the Community Centre.

It is hoped that these opening times can be expanded upon by introducing a job search facility, which could prove to be extremely useful in the present economic climate for both the unemployed and those in employment wishing to change jobs or careers. For further details please call in to the Centre

For those wishing to gain a certified qualification we can also offer courses run by the Durham County Council Adult Learning Services.

It is also possible that the Computer Suite could be hired by outside organisations and arrangements should be made in the first instance by contacting the Centre Manager, Derek Bradley, on telephone number 01429 88220 or by email: stationcommunitycentre@trimdon.org
